Umvuzo Health causes a sensation with the launch of two soccer tournaments
Umvuzo and Sibanye Gold hosted two incredible soccer tournaments on 22 and 29 September 2013.
The tournaments took place at the Beatrix Mine Shaft in Welkom and at the Masizakhele Grounds in Carletonville. The air was buzzing with high energy and the day brightened as soon as the players stepped onto the field with their clothing sponsored by Umvuzo Health.
With their new Umvuvuzelas (Umvuzo vuvuzelas) the crowd was sure to rumble. The spectators eagerly participated in the 'dance-offs' and the 'hop-the-ball-as-much-as-you-can' contests. In Carletonville, the winning contestant hopped the ball an astonishing 73 times!
The teams that participated in Welkom included Sibanye Golden Stars, Beatrix Mighty Blue, Beatrix Umlilo and Beatrix Fako Chiefs. The tournament kicked off with a game between Sibanye Golden Stars and Beatrix Mighty Blue, with an amazing 7 - 0 victory by the Sibanye Golden Stars.
In the second game, Beatrix Umlilo played against Beatrix Fako Chiefs and the game ended with a draw of one goal each. The penalty shoot-outs caused a lot of excitement and Beatrix Fako Chiefs won with 5 - 4 penalty goals in their favour. The nail-biting final between Sibanye Golden Stars and Beatrix Fako Chiefs had everyone sitting on the edges of their seats, but the triumph went to Sibanye Golden Stars with a final score of 3 - 2.
In Carletonville, the Umvuzo team was more relaxed as the first tournament had proved to be a success. The Carletonville teams included Kloof Academy, Driefontein, Natal United Driefontein and Shared Services. Kloof Academy won the first game against Shared Services with a final score of 4 - 2. Driefontein won the second game with a close score of 3 - 2 over Natal United Driefontein.
At last the finals started and Kloof Academy battled it out with Driefontein in an extremely tense and exciting game. After a nerve-racking game, Kloof Academy was crowned victorious with a 3 - 2 win.
We would like to thank Mr Sidney Mdluli and the entire Sibanye Gold Sports Committee for organising these great events and for making these events the resounding success that they were.
'We believe this will not be a once-off event, but an ongoing partnership with Umvuzo,' said the excited Mr Mdluli.
'I cannot agree with Sidney more. This was certainly only the beginning. We have every intention to take this tournament to new heights in the future and this was a fantastic start,' answered Busi Roberts from Umvuzo.
We would also like to thank Mr Daniel Maseko, Deputy Chairperson of the Umvuzo Board of Trustees, who attended both the tournaments and enthusiastically supported it in high spirits. Thanks to the entire Umvuzo team for the great work they do to host such spectacular events.
