A first-hand overview of SACCI's (SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s) position on the labour market will be presented by Mxolisi Manyakanyaka.

A first-hand overview of SACCI's (SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry's) position on the labour market will be presented by Mxolisi Manyakanyaka, Chairman of the HR Forum of the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Vice-Chairman of the Institute of People Management, KZN Branch. Mxolisi presented this Labour Market Assessment on behalf of SACCI CEO, Neren Rau, earlier this month and felt that it was so important to get this scenario across to the HR community that he has offered to present it again at this IPM Breakfast Session.

 The presentation will include SACCI's assessment on:

  • Unemployment, especially among the youth, due largely to poor basic education;
  • Restrictive labour legislation, including burdensome dismissal procedures which inhibit employment;
  • High levels of industrial action, often accompanied by violence and intimidation; and
  • The high costs of employment in terms of compliance and increased wage demands.

This presentation has very important messages for business, labour, government and education. It needs to be heeded by all these sectors in order to find all-encompassing solutions which will place South Africa on a sound economic footing, particularly in present global recessionary conditions which threaten South Africa's competitiveness both domestically and internationally.
