The Umvuzo members elected a new board of trustees at the Annual General Meeting held on 14 June 2013. The meeting was held at the Southern Sun, Arcadia in Pretoria.
A new record was set as we saw scores of members coming to attend the AGM this year. We had a total of 221 members who attended the AGM.
A total of 27 nominees were received by the Scheme (Umvuzo) before this day, which was also the first for the Scheme. This is a clear indication that the members are interested in the affairs of the Scheme and want to be involved.
The elections were fair and free, and the Council of Medical Schemes sent a representative to observe the proceedings of the day. Members waited patiently in long queues to cast their votes on the secret ballot papers. The Scheme's appointed auditing firm, Ngubane and Co. were there to oversee the process and tally the votes at the end.

Board Member
The board of trustees is represented 100% by members of the Scheme, thus ensuring the members' best interests are at the heart of every decision. We are also pleased to see the first female member of the board. We are certain she will bring a new energy and a different perspective when robust discussions are held.
We would like to congratulate all our newly elected and re-elected board of trustees. We welcome you to the Umvuzo Board of Trustees if you are new to our Board and thank you for your continuing commitment if you are a returning Board Member.
We wish you a very successful term as you serve our members.
We would also like to thank all the Umvuzo members who took the time to attend this year's AGM and vote. We thank you for your continued support of your medical aid scheme.
Council for Medical Schemes
The Council for Medical Schemes is a statutory body established by the Medical Schemes Act (131 of 1998) to provide regulatory supervision of private health financing through medical schemes. The governance of the Council is vested in a board appointed by the Minister of Health, consisting of a Non-executive Chairman, Deputy Chairman and 13 members. The Executive Head of the Council is the Registrar, also appointed by the Minister in terms of the Medical Schemes Act. The Council determines overall policy, but day to day decisions and management of staff are the responsibility of the Registrar and the Executive Managers.
The Council for Medical Schemes supervises a massive and very important industry: There are about 97 medical schemes in South Africa with around 8 469 784 beneficiaries. These schemes have a total annual contribution flow of about R84.9 billion.
