CCMA’s case load has jumped 25% in 5 years

This was announced at a recent Department of Labour two-day annual evaluation and planning workshop. The drastic increase points to how much the relationship between employers and employees has deteriorated in the last little while.

Nerine Kahn, executive director of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) said that in 2012, the CCMA’s case load had sky rocketed and reached an all-time high, with 160 000 cases coming under the spotlight.

“This figure translates to over 13 000 cases per month or 3 333 cases per week or a total of 667 cases each working day. The unprecedented rise in the case load points to antagonistic labour market relations, and this is worrying for stability in the labour market. The situation also indicates that the economic environment is tough.”

Over the past year, 79% of the CCMA’s cases have been about unfair dismissals.
