Postponed: Application for Vavi suspension to be overturned

Sapa reports that on Tuesday an attempt made by the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa) to have Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi’s suspension overturned was postponed.

This followed several unions applying to intervene. These unions are the:

  • National Union of Mineworkers,
  • South African Democratic Teachers' Union,
  • Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union,
  • South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union,
  • National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union,
  • Finance Union, and
  • Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers' Union.

The case was postponed to allow the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) affiliates who are making interventions to file affidavits.

"The intervening unions have been allowed to intervene. The matter is likely to be set down for 8 October," said Craig Watt-Pringle SC for the intervening unions.
