North West youth want to approach court to secure mining jobs from IFM

The youth around Modderspruit village near Bapong in Brits, North West, have threatened to approach the courts to force the mining company in the area to employ them.

The Modderspruit Unemployment Forum marched to International Ferro Metal (IFM), which operates in the area, accusing the mine of failing to employ locals and developing the community. Saying that the community has been ignored for far too long, the residents demanded 500 jobs in the next 14 days. Although the mining industry has shed thousands of jobs and many others are expected to be lost in the near future, the youth in the area are adamant that the mining companies have to give back to the community. Modderspruit, like many other mining areas, remains underdeveloped. The youth also demanded that the mine must create community projects to be undertaken by the unemployed youth. IFM mine management received the memorandum and promised to respond in due course.
