College aims for 10 000 artisans
According to The New Age, Doubt Mabani, manager of the Gateway City FET College in Durban, says the country needs to produce highly qualified artisans to meet market demands.
Responding to calls by higher education minister Blade Nzimande for matriculants to look to tertiary studies at FETs as a necessary career step, he said: “We aim to produce about 10000 artisans in the next five years. We are very committed to achieving this number.”
“Minister Nzimande has promised to give us money to ensure that we meet the number needed for skilled artisans.
“We also assist our students by placing them in various workplaces once they’re done the course, using the relationship we have with Department of Higher Education and Training and private companies,” said Mabanzi.
He said that in countries such as China and Korea, they started training people at an early age, so if South Africa could manage to do that it would help to defeat the scourge of unemployment, reports The New Age.
“If you are an artisan, you won’t go to bed with an empty stomach,” said Mabanzi.
