There are countless things to do today that will improve our quality of life in the future. Tom Rath, author of Eat Move Sleep: How small choices lead to big changes couldn't have said it better: "The key is to tie good decisions to near-term incentives instead of imagining you will skip the cheeseburger at lunch to prevent a heart attack in 30 years".

The three most crucial things that will improve quality of life are:

  1. Nutrition – Stop dieting and start living! Get out of the routine of always being on a regimen or trying out some form of weird dieting trick that you found on Google. How do you expect to stick to extreme diets if you can't even get back to basics? Start with a healthy eating routine that is sustainable and right for life. Focus on whole foods and eat less food-like products (any or most processed foods).
  2. Physical activity – Current research classified our sitting from day-to-day as a disease. They found that if you exercise between 30 and 60 minutes daily, it won't make up for the endless hours that you have been sitting at work. Unfortunately, your 60 minute run on the treadmill does not eliminate the detrimental effects of sitting on your health. We have to keep moving throughout the day – we were made to move!  Be sure to be physically active every hour in the day. Rath recommends that we build activities and movement into our daily routine: why not spend your time on a stationary cycling bike when writing your reports? The extra oxygen and serotonin to your brain will help you to achieve so much more. Start thinking outside of the box.
  3. Sleep – Countless times we have heard that we need between seven and eight hours of quality sleep. Enough sleep will make us more alert and help us to achieve much more during the day. Studies have found that the performers in life are those people who get their seven to eight hours of sleep. We sometimes get caught in the idea that those who achieve a lot in life are those who put in more working hours, depriving themselves of precious sleep in order to get what they want. Studies show differently. A lack of sleep has also been associated with an increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and premature death. Invest in your future with sleep.
