Monique Mortlock reports that a PetroSA employee has told Eyewitness News that voluntary severance packages recently offered by the parastatal were not satisfactory.
The cash-strapped fuel producer aims to save costs after suffering a net operating loss of R14.6 billion over the past financial year following plummeting oil prices and feedstock challenges at its gas-to-liquids refinery in Mossel Bay. Yet, PetroSA’s Thabo Mabaso claimed the voluntary severance package offered to all employees was a good deal.
He said: “We’ve engaged with employees. People are generally willing to support the efforts that the company has put in place.” Mabaso added that management would not release staff who were deemed to be assets and would first assess employees who wanted to take the deal. One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said many colleagues were not taking the deal because they felt the company was not offering enough in terms of remuneration. The package includes two weeks’ pay for every year of service at the company.
