Head office retrenchments at Times Media

Times Media Group CE Andrew Bonamour confirmed to Grubstreet on Tuesday that there were retrenchments on the go at the company’s head office, saying that it was “part of a drive to be more efficient and have fewer layers.”

This followed news last month of retrenchments in the subsroom of Business Day and a number of rounds of cost-cutting and retrenchments across the company in the past couple of years, including at the flagship Sunday Times late last year. Managers whose names are known to Grubstreet are affected in the recent culling at head office. Besides the Sunday Times and Business Day, Times Media owns The Times, Financial Mail, the Sowetan, the Daily Dispatch and The Herald. Under Bonamour, who became CEO in January 2013, Times Media started selling non-core assets, focusing on the media assets and moving into broadcasting in SA and on the continent.
