News24 reports that the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has fired two of their staff members after the two were found guilty of sexual harassment during disciplinary hearings. Two similar cases are underway and the results of these matters will be made available when these are finalised.
These disciplinary hearings were chaired by independent senior counsel.
In a statement, university rector, Adam Habib, stated that in addition to sexual harassment, one of the staff members had also been found guilty of sexual/indecent assault.
Wits is in the process of conducting an in-depth investigation into sexual harassment as well as the university’s current policies and procedures to prevent incidents such as these from happening again. This is anticipated to be completed within two weeks.
