On Friday, the Daily News reported that all students registering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) from next year must pass, or obtain a credit for, a compulsory Zulu module before they can graduate.
This decision, which has been approved in principle, has angered many parents and educationists. This rule has been called “apartheid under a different guise” according to the newspaper’s website
The chairman of the South Durban region of the KZN Parents’ Association, Vee Gani, feels that it is wrong for the university to impose this new language policy, all of a sudden, on students:
“Students must be afforded the opportunity to choose for themselves if they want to take Zulu as a language. If they [the university] go ahead with this, it is going to be a problem,” he said.
