Strike to halt platinum sector
Last week, we reported that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) was contemplating going on strike in the platinum belt. Yesterday, Eyewitness News reported that the platinum sector is expected to grind to a standstill this week as more than 100 000 miners go on strike demanding higher wages.
Over the weekend during a mass meeting in Rustenburg, Amcu voted to strike. Workers from Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin are set to down tools from Thursday.
The industry is still recovering from a wave of violent strikes in 2012, including the Lonmin strike where 34 workers were shot dead by police, reports Eyewitness News.
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said he would issue a strike notice to the mining companies.
Amcu members are demanding a R12 500 minimum salary.
