Strike season continues in 2014
Eyewitness News reports that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) - which is the majority union on the platinum belt - is contemplating embarking on a strike that will potentially cripple the platinum industry.
The union wants the entry-level monthly salary to be upped to R12 500, whereas Impala Platinum offered an 8% increase. The body reaffirmed the mandate to go on strike but is still waiting on mandates from members working on other mines.
Amcu president, Joseph Mathunjwa, said: “The negotiations are over. It resulted in a deadlock and we have a certificate of non-revolution. We’re confirming the mandate for the members and from there we’ll be able to tell you which direction we’ll take.”
Impala Platinum’s Johan Theron says they are still waiting to negotiate but a 48-hour strike notice could be served at any time.
“Up to now, we haven’t received a 48-hour strike notice. But certainly, with the reaffirming of the mandate, it does allow them to issue a 48-hour strike notice when they choose to do so,” said Theron.
