Thinking About Changing Jobs -How to Prepare for the Dynamic 2016 Job Market
It's March and to your surprise the first 2 months of the year have flown by with relative ease. Life isn't bad on the professional front but there is a little voice whispering in your ear that it could be better. If only you earned a little more or had a few more annual leave days to take advantage of? Not to mention the always pleasant possibility of flexi time…
Yup, a new job with ‘better everything' is exactly what the doctor ordered! The question is… how do you find this great new job?
Here's our how-to guide to finding the perfect job for you:
Start by completing a thorough analysis of your current position and potential career trajectory rather than simply throwing yourself into job search overdrive. Liz Prince, Business Manager for Amiqus, suggests asking yourself the following questions to aid this process:
Are you working on what you want to focus on?
Is your job keeping your skills up to date?
What projects are on the horizon?
Is the environment right for you?
Do you feel valued?
What would make you happier?
Are you growing?
If going through this checklist reinforces your decision to look for greener pastures, your next step is to determine what skills are currently in demand in the 2016 job market and which skills you should be brushing up on to give yourself that much desired competitive edge.
According to LinkedIn's recently published list of ‘The 25 Skills That Can Get You Hired in 2016' which isbased on an analysis of LinkedIn's recruiting activity throughout 2015.

Another consideration when hitting the job market is the increasing demand for employees who are capable of straddling multiple areas of skills expertise within one specific role. Gone are the days of specializing in one specific area only and making a career out of it. Nowadays companies are looking for ‘Hybrid Workers'. So, for example, if you are applying for a position as a Key Account Managers, a knack for social media and an understanding of IT would be advantageous.
"The successful employee of tomorrow will need to combine traditional soft skills such as communication and collaboration with the hard, technical skills that used to belong to a select tech-savvy group'' explains Gloria Larson, president of Bentley University.
Finally, given today's constantly changing business climate, it is essential for employees to have solid mix of adaptable hard and soft skills. Knowledge of other cultures, a global mind set, a willingness to learn and strong communication skills are just a few of the skills highlighted by workplace consultant Stan Kimer as being indispensable to career growth and success.
"Almost any company can do business worldwide and employ talent all over the globe," says Kimer. "The fastest-growing economies are in Asia and South America, and a key skill will be knowing how to market, sell, and communicate in these global markets."
While extra leave days and additional income are strong motivators when considering changing jobs, it is always wise to be cognisant of the age old saying "The grass isn't always greener on the other side." Changing jobs is never an easy process and you should always ensure that your reasons for wanting to move are valid and will ultimately make a difficult process worthwhile.
