Latest criminal background check technology

"What is the background of the person I am looking to employ?" This is the first question you must ask when you recruit.

Because of high unemployment rates and difficulties in finding employment, candidates have become desperate to get jobs. And because they are so desperate, they often feel it’s necessary to leave out some details of their past which could damage their chances of getting a new job.

Make sure you’re not at the candidate’s mercy!

Conduct several searches on potential candidates to make sure that you form a complete picture of them and fill in all the blanks he doesn’t tell you. At the end of the day, the less you know about a potential hire, the more your company could be damaged.

The first, and probably one of the most important, checks that you always need to do before you employ someone is a criminal background check:

  • This check will give you an exact insight into any criminal behaviour or criminal convictions that the person in question displays.

Previously, only a full police clearance would suffice to determine if a person has a criminal record. However, because you have to wait so long to get any results from this process, many recruiters have turned to other methods to determine criminal liability.

For example, recently a system for criminal background checks was launched which interfaces with the South African Police Services’ automated fingerprint identification system. This system captures digital fingerprints using electronic fingerprint scanners and the latest biometric technology.

So if you do large volumes of recruiting, and need to perform background checks on a lot of candidates, you can purchase a system to use in your own offices at minimal cost (between R100 and R150, depending on suppliers). You can access the results of the search within 72 hours of it being done.
