Victory over payment of commuted overtime, rural allowances to KZN interns

After more than a year of contention over non-payment of commuted overtime and rural allowances for foreign qualified interns working in KwaZulu-Natal, it is with great pleasure that we can now report that the matter has finally been resolved. News from the KZN Department of Health is that payments have been effected retrospectively and this has come with a great sense of relief to the disadvantaged doctors.

This victory has demonstrated SAMA’s quest to put the best interests of its members first and go beyond the parameters of its membership, as some of the doctors that benefited from this protracted grievance were not SAMA members. It is, however, worth-noting that the battle is not over yet as SAMA is yet again gearing to take the same fight to the North West province.

The KZN victory has indeed set a positive precedent that provides the necessary foundation for future prospects of success on matters of similar challenge.
