The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in Limpopo province has reconsidered the intervention by Makoma Makhurupetja the MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs. The intervention by the MEC is directed at resolving the protest action by our members at the Vhembe District.
SAMWU members have been protesting since November 2015 demanding quiet number of issues which are critical to their lively hood. The industrial action had negative impact to the provision of services to the communities under Vhembe District Municipality. The inconvenience that has been caused to community members should solely be blamed on the management of the municipality which bluntly refused to negotiate with the union on the issues raised so to speedily resolve issues raised.
SAMWU have had numerous engagements at a provincial level with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), COSATU and the ruling ANC with the aim of finding a solution to the issues which included;
• Workers’ demand that the Political Management Team be reshuffled or changed because the Municipality is collapsing under their watch-full eye.
• That the irregular appointment of the municipal Manager must be reviewed.
• Collapse of financial status of the municipality
• The lifting of the suspension to shop stewards and members of the union.
• Discipline of the Director Corporate Service
• And the removing of security whose service was not necessary in the institution.
The union appreciates the progress done by the ruling party [ANC] thus far in its attempt dealing with the other part (reshufflement), it believes that the outcome shall seek to harmonize the situation in Vhembe.
With regard to the Administrative matters and the intervention by the Coghsta MEC, Makoma Makhurupetja. The trade union appreciates the efforts by the MEC mediating so as to get the situation back to normal particularly the lifting of suspension to shopstewards, and conditions of employment.
