The Labour Department has stripped its registrar, Johan Crouse, of his title with immediate effect on the grounds of gross insubordination. He is to be assigned new responsibilities in the department.
This comes after Crouse lodged an application in the Labour Court to place the Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers’ Union (Ceppwawu) under administration. Ceppwawu is an affiliate of labour federation Cosatu and has not submitted audited financial statements since 2010, as required by law. Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant had sought to halt Crouse’s Labour Court action, which is meant to be heard on 6 August. Ceppwawu is embroiled in a bitter factional battle for its control and that of its lucrative investment company worth about R3.8bn. Crouse yesterday said he would fight the decision and has spoken to his union, the Public Servants Association (PSA) to deal with this matter
