Farm worker strikes did not pay off

In a report published by the Cape Times, political writer Cobus Coetzee says that farm workers have been ‘punished’ for the strike that they went on earlier this year.

Coetzee states that some workers were evicted from farms while others were billed for electricity, water and housing that were previously subsidised. In some cases, farmers reduced their workers’ working hours and mechanised their operations.

A draft report into the state of agriculture and the rural economy recommends the government urgently appoint an inquiry into how many evictions had taken place in the Western Cape since March.
