Hawks pulled in to help tackle bogus teachers

The situation has become so serious that the body, which is tasked with maintaining teacher ethical and professional standards, has roped in the Directorate of Priority Crimes, popularly known as the Hawks, to probe the fraud. The council’s offices in Centurion, in Gauteng, and in KwaZulu-Natal are named as places where the fraud is most rampant. SACE revealed this in its recent annual report, which covered the financial year ending in March 2017.

The council said it had been overwhelmed by the number of qualified teachers registering for the first time during the financial year. The council vetted and verified a whopping 84,065 new applicants, which was more than the 60,000 that had been targeted. It indicated that it had put in place other interventions to clamp down on the fraudulent qualifications.
