Solidarity – Telkom must not dismiss workers

Solidarity is set to take legal action if any of its members who are employed at Telkom are dismissed, the trade union said on Thursday.

"Should some of our members be forcefully retrenched, we will attend to each case individually," said spokesperson Marius Croucamp, according to a Fin24 report.

"Solidarity will therefore consider taking legal action if we find it necessary."

Croucamp was speaking about a retrenchment process of management and specialist workers that was employed as a phase of Telkom's turnaround strategy, reports Fin24.

Solidarity represented 16 of the 105 workers who had been issued termination letters at the beginning of the month.

According to Fin24:

  • The trade union asked Telkom to withdraw the termination notices sent to the affected workers earlier this week.
  • On Tuesday, Telkom responded by releasing a statement saying that it would not retract the notices as they had been sent as part of a legitimate process and the company needed to focus on "long-term commercial sustainability".
  • It added that the employees who received notices were given opportunities to apply for available positions in the new structures of the company or to take voluntary retrenchment packages.
