Vavi tries to cause waves again…

Zwelinzima Vavi, suspended general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), does not believe in going quietly into that good night. According to Polity, at the Eighth Pan African Congress in Johannesburg where he spoke in his personal capacity, Vavi declared that workers should ponder about how to organise themselves politically so that they can be represented in government.

"Workers around the world, not only in Africa, have always elected political elites that have implemented policies that do not serve their political and economic interests. Perhaps we need to think very hard about how we should politically organise workers to represent their own interests in the state,” he said.

At the conference, Vavi was speaking about the conditions of the working class and said that Africans, as well as the working class around the world, are still being exploited and oppressed.

Recently, reports emerged that Vavi and the National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa (Numsa) – which has decided not to support the African National Congress (ANC) in this year’s general election - were allegedly meeting with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). These reports were denied.
