New matrics must take care when enrolling for HR diplomas

In these times, there is little room for unqualified people to make their way into HR. This makes it important for school leavers and new matriculants to choose the appropriate qualifications with which they can start a career in HR.
According to a media release issued by the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP), qualifications which are recognised within the field are those offered by universities, universities of technology and colleges (both private and public further education and training - FET - colleges) which are regulated within the National Qualification Framework (NQF) system.
In the HR field, the SABPP controls the accreditation of training providers within the NQF system. Those providers - which are certified at one or more different levels (for example, an FET certificate at NQF level 4 or a diploma/national diploma at NQF level 5) - are listed on the SABPP website.
Warning: There are many companies that offer unregistered qualifications, often called ‘short courses’, and students who take these do not realise that their qualifications are not properly registered.
A student wishing to gain admission to a registered course must have the required exemptions:
- A matriculant with a B-degree exemption may seek admission to a university or university of technology,
- A matriculant with a diploma exemption can seek admission to diploma courses at a comprehensive university or a university or technology, and
- A matriculant with an FET exemption can seek admission to an FET college for an NQF level 4 certificate.
