POPI is now law!

President Jacob Zuma signed the Protection of Personal Information Bill (POPI) into law on Wednesday this week. Polity  reports that it isn’t certain when the act will commence but when it does, you will have one year to get your business compliant with this legislation.

What will happen to you if you don’t implement POPI in your business?

Mark Craddock, KPMG’s POPI specialist, warns companies against not implementing POPI: “Over the past year, a number of high-profile organisations have suffered significant reputational damage as a result of personal information breaches.”
He advises businesses to identify their departments that need the most work to become POPI compliant.

“The consequences of non-compliance could include regulatory fines and even prison sentences so it is in the best interests of organisations to assess their current level of compliance with the provisions of the POPI Act sooner rather than later,” explains Cradock.

For details on POPI, e.g. who needs to comply with this legislation, follow this link.
