Organisational Development: What’s that?

Lia Marus
ARTICLES

I hate to admit that when I was at business school, organisational development (OD) was my least favourite subject as there were always reams of information to read but never any point to it. No one ever told us how to “do” OD.

It was only when I started at HR Pulse that I learned OD ultimately aims to help organisations adapt to change and become more effective, taking this change into account. Most importantly, I learned that OD is not all about big words and concepts – there’s actually a practical application to this discipline!

I was very excited when Knowledge Resources invited me to their Organisational Development Conference happening at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel tomorrow and Wednesday.

Three speakers I’m very excited to hear are:

  • Lydia Cillie-Schmidt, who owns The Talent Hub. She will speak about how social media and virtual tools are used in organisational development. She’ll share some of the lessons she’s learned along the way, specifically how social media and virtual technologies:
    -    Impact on your organisation;

    -    Can be used in the different stages of OD.

  • Lebohang Sekoto, organisational design and development manager at Randwater, who will speak about how OD and the strategic human capital division enabled the turnaround and growth strategy of Rand Water to achieve sterling company results.

  • Bangani Ngeleza, TAU: practice leader OD: National Treasury, will speak about a successful change and transformation project that was implemented by the National Treasury’s technical assistance unit  to support one of South Africa’s public entities.

I’ll be Tweeting live from the event so be sure to follow me on @liamarus. The hashtag I’ll be using is #HRPulse@OD2013.
