News24 reports that the National Union of Mineworkers announced on Sunday that several thousand of its members began striking in the coal sector at 6pm yesterday evening.
Talks over wage increases with the employers, represented by the Chamber of Mines, collapsed last week and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration issued a certificate of non-resolution of a dispute, the NUM said in a statement. The union is seeking a R1,000 per month increase for the lowest category of workers and 14% for the higher-level categories of artisans, miners and officials. The coal producers, namely Anglo Coal, Glencore, Exxaro, Kangra, Koornfontein, and Msobo, are apparently offering increases of between 5% and 8.5%. NUM chief negotiator Peter Bailey indicated that the union has been negotiating with the industry for three-and-a-half months and under the auspices of the CCMA for six weeks.
